There’s nothing worse than a clean home that smells dirty.
If you live in Mississauga and your basement or laundry room has a nasty sewer smell — even when everything looks fine — chances are, your floor drain is to blame.
It’s one of the most common issues we handle at UPR.
And the good news? It’s also one of the easiest to fix… if you know what you’re doing.
Your floor drain connects directly to your home’s waste line. But it’s designed with a water-filled trap — a little U-shaped bend that holds water to block sewer gas from coming up.
When that trap dries out (which happens if the drain isn’t used regularly), there’s nothing to stop that gas from creeping back up into your home. That’s when you get the signature “rotten egg” smell — and no, opening a window won’t solve it.
Other times, it’s not the trap at all. We’ve seen:
Sludge and grease buildup just below the grate
Dead biofilm in the drain walls
Broken traps or unvented systems in older Mississauga homes
Even full-on sewer line backups hiding deeper in the system
First, we inspect — visually or with a camera — to figure out exactly what’s going on.
Then we use pro-grade tools to fix it:
Jet the drain to remove all buildup
Flush or reseal the trap
Vent or correct improper piping
And if needed, inspect the main line to rule out deeper sewer issues
We’ll leave the area clean, odor-free, and dry — and show you a simple maintenance tip to keep it that way for good.
Strong sulfur smell near your floor drain
Odor gets worse after laundry or rain
Gurgling noise from the drain when nearby fixtures run
Flies or moisture around the drain cover
If that’s what you’re dealing with — give us a call. You’re not alone, and you don’t have to put up with it.
If your floor drain stinks, don’t overthink — UPR clears it in a blink.
